Sergio Aguero has described Lionel Messi's goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina as "awesome," and dismissed criticism of the Barcelona star's record for Argentina.
La Albiceleste began their Group F campaign with a win over Safet Susic's World Cup debutants with Messi scoring the second after an own goal from Sead Kolasinac before Vedad Ibisevic pulled one back.
Aguero expressed his admiration for Messi's goal, which saw the Barcelona forward dribble past several Bosnian defenders before firing in off the post, and also stressed that many are too quick to judge him and the fact that he failed to score in the 2010 World Cup.
"People have talked too much about the eight-year gap between his first and second [World Cup] goals," the 26-year-old said of his team-mate in an interview with the Times of India.
"Yes, he did not score in the 2010 World Cup, but he played wonderfully well, assisting so many goals for others. It is important to think that Argentina wins, because as an individual one tries nothing more than to achieve the best possible result for the team.
"Leo has been fantastic so far. The goal he had scored against Bosnia was an awesome strike. We were happy too, since we all knew what he is capable of doing.
"Every team will welcome a goal at that stage of the match. Since it was the first match of the World Cup, we all wanted to start it in a positive way."
Argentina are hopeful of adding a third World Cup to the ones they secured in 1978 and 1986 and, despite some discontent surrounding the nature of the performance against Bosnia, Aguero still believes they can do just that.
"We were really satisfied... to start the World cup with three points," he added.
"Criticism will be there, always. But we know we have done our bit. Yes, it could always be better. That is what we all are trying to be both as individuals and as a team."
Argentina face Iran in their second Group F game on Saturday.
